What is Fashion & Apparel Design?
Fashion & Apparel Design is a dynamic, multidisciplinary field that sits at the intersection of art, culture, technology and business. It encompasses the creative process of designing clothing and accessories — from initial concept sketching and fabric selection through pattern making and garment construction to styling, branding and retail. A fashion designer must be simultaneously an artist, a craftsperson, a trend analyst, a materials expert and a businessperson.
India’s fashion and apparel industry is one of the largest in the world. The country is both a major manufacturing hub for global fashion brands and an increasingly influential creative force in its own right, with a growing domestic luxury segment, a booming export sector and a vibrant independent designer ecosystem. Bengaluru alone is home to hundreds of export houses, boutique labels, retail headquarters and emerging designers.
